Plaster and spray paint on canvas. Signed and dated ‘Sara van Vliet 2022' (on the reverse).
Notes: Sara van Vliet, now 25 years old, graduated from the HKU in Utrecht in 2022 and after receiving a nomination for the prestigious Royal Painting Prize in the same year, she quickly gained recognition. Currently pursuing a Master in painting at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen, she is set to graduate this year. Sara's artistic philosophy revolves around the contemplation of life's symbolism, finding meaning in the mundane. Her fascination with the duality inherent in all things drives her creative process, leading her to explore the intricate interplay of light and shadow in her work. Renowned for her captivating still lifes, Sara challenges conventional perceptions, infusing her compositions with layers of narrative depth. Through subtle hints and nuanced imagery, she invites viewers to question not only her art but also their own perceptions and behaviours. In Sara van Vliet's hands, every day becomes a canvas for profound introspection, a testament to the transformative power of art.
The act of giving and receiving flowers encapsulates the cycle of life and death. They symbolise fleeting moments of beauty and remind us of the inevitability of impermanence. Each flower is a reminder to cherish the present moment, for the petals that eventually wither and fall, life too is ephemeral. The same for candles, the moment you light them, they are supposed to burn up. That is the other side of these ‘cosy’ types of moments. By making the candle in plaster they are ‘frozen’ in time.
The painting 'All Wishes' portrays a fleeting moment, captured coarsely with plaster. The drawing is a one-hit wonder, thanks to the quick-drying characteristic of plaster. This candleholder graces the dinner table daily, a sight observed regularly. The joyous moments spent around these candles are ephemeral. In this work, the artist captured that feeling on canvas.
