Parts Project, The Hague, Face – Zhang Shujian, 27 March – 16 May 2021
Note:
Zhang Shujian is a Chinese photorealistic painter renowned for his meticulous attention to the human face. He is captivated by depicting features with precise detail: freckles, blemishes, and imperfections are intricately rendered, with a particular focus on skin texture. He crafts individual hairs with minute brushstrokes. “For the hair,” Zhang Shujian said, “I go find the thinnest nylon brush in the art supply store and draw each strand one by one. On average, I finish one painting per month.” His portraits, often distorting the human form into surreal abstractions, explore imperfections and character rather than conventional beauty. His work has been exhibited globally, including in Beijing, Shanghai, and Amsterdam.
