Notes: Iriée Zamblé is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. Zamblé is one of the winners of the Royal Award for Modern Painting in 2022. She recently finished a 6-month residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, supported by the Mondriaan Fund. Zamblé was also an artist-in-residence at Museum het Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam and Roodkapje Rotterdam. Her work is part of multiple collections such as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Museum het Rembrandthuis and AMC Hospital. Zamblé’s work has been shown in numerous museums, galleries, and art fairs such as Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Workplace Gallery London and Art Rotterdam.
Zamblé delves into the exploration of established norms within portraiture through the mediums of drawing and painting. Her inspiration is drawn from the tapestry of everyday life, delving into concepts that dissect the complex notions of black identity and her rich West African heritage. Incorporating elements from those encountered on the streets, friends, and acquaintances, the fictive individuals brought to life in Zamblé's paintings exude an unmistakable air of coolness. This coolness is conveyed through their attitudes, fashion choices, and language. It serves as a powerful means of reclaiming control over one's body and narrative, a response to the historical lack thereof. Zamblé's artistic focus zeroes in on the minutiae of the painted figures in her work. With a keen eye for style and self-expression, she transforms them into bold and authentic personas.

Education:
HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht, Bachelor Fine Art.
