Born in Brussels, Raoul Hynckes fled to the Netherlands during World War I. During his first years there, he painted various city scenes and harbour views of Zuiderzee towns. Initially, he was inspired by impressionist techniques, but from the beginning of the 1930s, he delved into allegorical still lifes characterised by magical realism, which often featured elements like withered trees, old nails, and skulls. In fact, Raoul Hynckes has been of great significance in the development of Dutch Magic Realism. The present still life testifies to his profound exploration of light and composition throughout his work.
