– Private collection, the Netherlands
Note:
The oeuvre of the self-taught Dutch artist Jan Roeland consists of paintings, drawings and graphics. Roeland used to work mainly in series, he commented: “I vary a lot on a theme until it makes me very sick. At the moment of saturation, a tension goes away. And then you get the excitement for something new that starts with a drawing.”
Roeland frequently portrayed everyday objects, such as envelopes, knives and hammers. Roeland’s urge for abstraction led to disarray, mostly since the simplified subjects were remarkably suitable for the flat surface. His paintings are precisely composed. Almost all surfaces, shapes and lines are monochrome, smooth and even.
Roeland is considered as a leading Dutch artist of the late twentieth century. His work has been exhibited frequently and is included in numerous important collections, including those of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
